"O Son of the Buddha! You previously asked, 'What is called a ground?' O Son of the Buddha! A ground is called 'bearing,' for it bears all millions of asaṃkhyeyas of merits; it is also called 'generating,' for it accomplishes all causes and fruits. Therefore it is called a ground. O Son of the Buddha! Relinquishing ordinary practices to be born into the house of the Buddha, succeeding to the bodhisattva stage and entering among the noble assembly, untouched by the four māras, equally illuminating both extremes of existence and non-existence, great faith is first perfected. Practising and studying the contemplation of the ultimate truth of the unarisen middle way, ascending to the second ground, third ground, and up to the eleventh ground, clearly contemplating the Dharma-doors, thought by thought ceasing in the dharma-stream, one sign and signless, the two bodies without specific location, communicating with the Buddha-lands alike—therefore it is called the Pramuditā-bhūmi.
