「爾時鹿母夫人白大王言：『王莫耗擾國土，召諸乳母。王宮中自有五百夫人。諸夫人者妬我生男。王今可以一太子與一夫人，令其乳哺，非其子耶？』王報夫人：『五百夫人常懷嫉妬，惱害鹿母。鹿母今者欲令我鞭打杖策，擯出驅遣，奪其命者，不逆夫人。夫人今者云何於怨嫌中放捨？此事甚難及也。又復能開天地之恩，以其太子與諸夫人。』

"Then Lady Deer-Mother addressed the great king: 'Let the king not trouble and disturb the realm to summon wet nurses. In the royal palace there are naturally five hundred consorts. Those ladies were jealous of my bearing sons. The king may now give one prince to each consort to nurse and nurture; would they not then be their children?' The king answered the lady: 'The five hundred consorts have constantly harboured jealousy, troubling and harming you, Deer-Mother. If you now wished me to whip them with rods, expel and banish them, or take their lives, I would not oppose you, my lady. How can you now let go and forgive in the midst of resentment and enmity? This is exceedingly difficult to equal. Furthermore, you can bestow grace as vast as heaven and earth, giving your princes to the consorts.'
