4.45

復次，提婆達多雖復隨佛出家，嫉妬情深，規望利養。雖復能多讀誦六萬香象經，而不能免阿鼻地獄罪。是人與阿闍世王共為親善，心相愛念，信用其言。時提婆達多報阿闍世王言：「汝可作新王，我亦欲作新佛。」阿闍世報言：「此事不然。父王存在。」提婆達多言：「汝應除之；我亦欲滅佛。然後新王、新佛教化眾生，不亦快乎？」

Furthermore, although Devadatta had renounced the household life to follow the Buddha, his jealousy was deep and he sought gain and offerings. Even though he was able to recite sixty thousand elephant-loads of sūtras, he still could not avoid the retribution of Avīci Hell. This man was close and friendly with King Ajātaśatru, cherishing each other in their hearts and trusting his words. At that time, Devadatta said to King Ajātaśatru: "You may become the new king, and I also wish to become the new Buddha." Ajātaśatru replied, "This cannot be so. My father the king is still alive." Devadatta said, "You should eliminate him; I also wish to destroy the Buddha. Thereafter, a new king and a new Buddha teaching and transforming sentient beings—would that not be delightful?"
