5.22

爾時摩伽陀王即起四兵而往收捕，送著深山懸嶮之處，即取一一賊，挑其兩目，刵劓耳鼻。爾時五百群賊身體苦痛，命在呼噏。爾時五百人中有一人是佛弟子，告諸大眾：「我等今者，命不云遠，何不至心，歸命於佛？」

At that time the king of Magadha raised the fourfold army, went to arrest them, and transported them to a steep and precipitous place deep in the mountains. He then took each bandit, gouged out both his eyes, and cut off his ears and nose. At that time the bodies of the five hundred bandits were racked with pain, and their lives hung by a single breath. Among the five hundred men, there was one who was a disciple of the Buddha; he said to the company: “Our lives are now not long for this world; why do we not wholeheartedly take refuge in the Buddha?”
