憂波離復白佛言：「若不得者，如〈皮革〉中說：『億耳在曠野處，見諸餓鬼種種受罪，或晝受福，夜則受罪；或夜受福，晝則受罪。所以爾者，以本人中，晝受戒法，夜作惡行；或夜受戒法，晝作惡行，是以不同。』此義云何？」

Upāli again said to the Buddha: "If one does not obtain them, as the 'Carmavastu' says: 'Koṭīkarṇa in the wilderness saw various hungry ghosts experiencing various retribution for crimes: some experienced blessings by day and suffered retribution by night, while others experienced blessings by night and suffered retribution by day. The reason for this was that when originally among humans, they received the precepts by day and did evil by night, or received the precepts by night and did evil by day; hence they were not the same.' What is the meaning of this?"
