優波離復白佛言：「優婆塞戒但於眾生上得戒，非眾生上亦得戒不？但於可殺、可盜、可婬、可妄語眾生上得戒耶？若於不可殺、不可盜、不可婬、不可欺誑眾生上亦得戒耶？」

Upāli further said to the Buddha, “Are the upāsaka precepts obtained only with respect to sentient beings, or are they also obtained with respect to non-sentient things? Are they obtained only with respect to sentient beings that can be killed, stolen from, violated sexually, or lied to, or are they also obtained with respect to sentient beings that cannot be killed, stolen from, violated sexually, or deceived?”
