"When the king heard these words, his heart was filled with grief and distress, just like a person choking who can neither swallow nor spit it out. He went out at once and issued a command to all the great ministers and lesser kings. When the great assembly had gathered, he proclaimed: 'Gentlemen! You should know that I once heard such words from the wise: "If there is an animal with golden fur on its body, it must be a bodhisattva. If a single sentient being gives rise to the bodhicitta, it brings great benefit to all sentient beings." How is it that today this evil hunter devised such an upāya to kill this bodhisattva? If I now bestow official ranks, emoluments, elephants, horses, the seven treasures, clothing, food and drink, money, or grain and silk upon this evil person, I would be walking the same path as him and becoming his partner in crime.' Having reflected thus, he seized the hunter and took his life. Taking the lion's skin, he returned to the mountains to the place of the carcass. He stacked gośīrṣa-candana to make a pyre, cremated the lion's skin and bones with fire, collected the śarīra, and erected a stūpa to make offerings to them."
