7.5

「爾時五百群賊復作是言：『卿是勝人，純善之人，云何乃能作是大惡？』婆羅門子言：『我誠知不應作是大惡。為欲利益一切眾生，并護汝等身命故。』爾時群賊而作是言：『卿自殺人，於我何益？』時婆羅門子報諸賊言：『我先知汝等在此，但我默然，不告語國王及我諸伴。以是故令汝等身命安隱。』爾時諸賊聞是語已，而作是念：『我等身命便為更生。』即前合掌，向是童子：『善哉大士！修大悲者！願勅我等何所作為。』答曰：『我所作者，唯當速發無上菩提之心。』爾時諸賊為報恩故，尋聲即發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。」

"At that time the five hundred bandits also said: 'You are a superior person, a person of pure goodness; how could you commit such a great evil?' The brāhmaṇa youth said: 'I truly know that I should not commit this great evil. It was done wishing to benefit all sentient beings and to preserve your bodily lives.' Then the bandits spoke, saying: 'You killed a man on your own; what benefit is that to us?' Then the brāhmaṇa youth told the bandits: 'I knew beforehand that you were here, but I remained silent and did not inform the king or my companions. Because of this, your bodily lives were kept safe and at peace.' When the bandits heard these words, they thought: 'Our bodily lives have indeed been reborn!' They immediately stepped forward, joined their palms toward the youth, and said: 'Excellent, Great Being! One who cultivates great compassion! Please command us as to what we should do.' He answered: 'What you must do is only swiftly give rise to the mind of supreme bodhi.' Then, in order to repay his kindness, the bandits immediately upon hearing his words aroused the mind of anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi."
