"Then the great king went into the palace and said to his consorts: 'I must now part with you all.' When the consorts heard the king's words, their hearts were terrified and their hair stood on end, not knowing the cause. In a faint voice, they asked the king: 'Where does the king wish to go?' The king said: 'Now, I wish to have my body gouged to make a thousand lamps to make an offering to the great master.' When the consorts heard the king's words, they rolled on the ground, wept aloud, fell into swoons, and vomited. After a long while, they revived, and said to the great king: 'Of all that is under heaven, nothing is more valued than one's own body. It is revered, honored, nurtured according to the seasons, with dread of its being unwell. Why now do you harm and discard it? The king is a man of wisdom, yet today you are like one deranged or possessed by demonic spirits!' The king said: 'It is not so.' 'If it is not so, for what reason do you undergo such suffering to make an offering to this brāhmaṇa? What is this for?' The king replied to the consorts: 'I wish to seek the Buddha-Dharma for the sake of all sentient beings.' 'If it is for the sake of all sentient beings, why today do you forsake us and leave us destitute?' The king replied to the consorts: 'All worldly love and affection must end in parting. Therefore, I now offer my body, wishing for you and all sentient beings to ignite the great lamp of wisdom in the great dark chamber, illuminating your dark ignorance of birth and death, severing the bond of fetters and the calamity of birth and death, transcending all distress, and attaining nirvāṇa. Why do you people now oppose my mind?' When the consorts heard the king's words, they remained silent and did not reply. With hearts grieving and choked with tears, they wept aloud, tore out their hair, scratched their faces, and cried out again: 'We of meager fortune are losing our refuge in our lifetime!'
