"Having heard the Dharma, the king rejoiced, and addressed the princes and the ministers, saying: 'If you have thoughts of compassion toward me, you should remember and uphold this teaching for me. Throughout the lands, in every village, wherever there are people, in cities, streets, and alleys, proclaim the king's superior decree: "You people should know! The great wheel-turning king saw all the people and all sentient beings submerged in the ocean of suffering, unable to escape evils. Arousing great compassion toward all sentient beings, he gouged his body to make a thousand lamps to seek half a verse. You should now be moved by the great king's mind of great benevolence and compassion; you should write down this verse, recite and study it, reflect upon its meaning, and practice it as taught."' Having heard these words, the people rejoiced and praised the great king with one voice, saying: 'Excellent! Excellent! The great king is truly a father of great benevolence and compassion, practicing this asceticism for the sake of all sentient beings. We should hasten to write it down.' Whether on paper or on silk, or on stones, or on trees, tiles, gravel, or leaves of grass, on narrow paths and essential roads, wherever many people walked, they also wrote it all down. Those who saw or heard it all gave rise to the mind set on anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi.
