"At that time the great king lit the thousand lamps to make an offering to the great master. Their radiance shone far across the worlds of the ten directions, and from the light of the lamps a voice also emerged, speaking this half-verse; those who heard the Dharma all gave rise to the mind set on anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi. The light shone upward as far as the palace of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, and the radiance of those lamps was able completely to obscure the lights of the gods. At that time the king of Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, seeing this radiance shining far into his heavenly palace, thought: 'By what cause and condition is there this radiance?' He then surveyed the world with his divine eye and saw that this great wheel-turning king had perfumed and cultivated his mind with great compassion, and for the sake of all sentient beings had gouged his body to make a thousand lamps as an offering to the great master in order to liberate all sentient beings. 'Therefore, we should now go down to the world to encourage, admonish, and assist him, causing his mind to rejoice.' He then descended to the world, transformed himself into a common mortal, went to the king's place, and asked the great king: 'Gouging your body to make a thousand lamps, practicing this asceticism to seek half a verse—what is your purpose in doing this?' [The king] answered: 'Good man! It is for the sake of all sentient beings, to cause them to give rise to the mind set on anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi.'
