"Then the transformed person resumed the form of Śakra, radiant with majestic brilliance, bright and manifest. Then Śakra, Lord of the Gods, asked the great king: 'In making this offering, do you wish to seek to become a heavenly king? A Māra king, or a Brahmā king?' At that time the wheel-turning sage king answered Śakra, Lord of the Gods: 'I do not seek the nobility of humans or gods; I purely wish to seek anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi for the sake of all sentient beings. Those who are not at peace I wish to bring peace; those who are not liberated I wish to liberate; those not yet crossed over I wish to ferry across; those who have not attained the path I wish to cause to attain the path.' Śakra, Lord of the Gods, said: 'Is the great king not being foolish now? One who seeks anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi can accomplish it only after long enduring toil and hardship. How can you now wish to seek the unexcelled path?' He answered Śakra, Lord of the Gods: 'Even if a red-hot iron wheel should spin upon my head, I would never regress from the unexcelled path on account of this suffering.' [Śakra said:] 'Though you speak these words now, I do not believe them.' At that time the wheel-turning sage king made this vow before Śakra, King of the Gods: 'If I am not truly seeking anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi and am deceiving Śakra, King of the Gods, let my thousand wounds never heal. If it is not so, let my blood become milk and the thousand wounds heal completely.' When he spoke these words, [his body] was restored as before. Śakra, King of the Gods, said: 'Excellent, great king! You are truly greatly compassionate! One who cultivates great compassion through such asceticism will before long attain anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi. When you attain saṃbodhi, you must deliver me first.' Then Śakra, Lord of the Gods, emitted a great radiance that shone all over the king's body, and together with hundreds of thousands of gods he simultaneously gave rise to the mind set on anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi.
