At that time the Bhagavat addressed the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the good sons, and the great assembly: "You should know that the great king of Vārāṇasī at that time was none other than my present father Śuddhodana; the mother at that time was none other than my present mother Māyā; and Prince Kṣānti was none other than myself. For immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, the Bodhisattva was filial to and supported his parents with clothing, food and drink, dwellings, and bedding, and even with his own flesh, bones, and marrow—such was the matter. Through these causes and conditions, he naturally attained buddhahood. This jeweled stupa that now wells up from the earth is the place where I renounced this marrow and this physical life for the sake of my parents, and where a stupa was erected on this very spot to make offerings. Now that I have attained buddhahood, it wells up and appears before us."
