The Buddha said: "Long ago, in the distant past beyond countless kalpas, a Buddha appeared in the world named Vipaśyin Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, Vidyācaraṇasaṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇām, Buddha, Bhagavat, appearing in the world, down to when the saddharma and its semblance had passed away. At that time there was a country called Vārāṇasī. Not far from the city was a mountain named Abode of the Sages, so called because hundreds of thousands of pratyekabuddhas lived on this mountain, and immeasurable ṛṣis endowed with the five superknowledges also lived in it. Because many ṛṣis and sages stayed and dwelt in it, it was called Mountain of the Abode of Sages. On that mountain there was a ṛṣi living in a southern cave, and another ṛṣi living in a northern cave. Between the two mountains there was a spring, and beside the spring there was a flat rock.
