The Buddha told Ānanda: “When humans are born in the world, misfortune arises from the mouth. One should guard the mouth more than [one fears] a raging fire. A blazing raging fire can burn [only] a single lifetime, but blazing harsh speech burns countless lifetimes; a blazing raging fire burns worldly wealth, but blazing harsh speech burns the seven noble treasures. Therefore, Ānanda, all misfortune of sentient beings comes forth from the mouth. The mouth and tongue are the axe that carves the body and the disaster that destroys it.”
