"At that time, Crown Prince Kalyāṇamitra stepped forward, embraced the guide, and wept aloud in sorrow: 'How unfortunate I am to lose in life the one who was my heaven!' He then covered the guide with golden sand, buried him in the earth, circumambulated him seven times to the right, bowed with his head to the ground, and departed. He went forward to the golden mountain. Having passed the golden mountain, he saw blue lotus flowers spread all over the ground, and beneath the lotus flowers were venomous blue serpents. These serpents possessed three kinds of venom: biting venom, touching venom, and breath venom. These venomous serpents coiled their bodies around the lotus stalks, opened their eyes, panted, and glared at the crown prince. At that time, Crown Prince Kalyāṇamitra immediately entered the samādhi of benevolence (maitrī). By the power of the samādhi, he arose and proceeded on the way, treading upon the lotus leaves as he went—at that time, the venomous serpents did not harm him because of the power of his benevolence—and went straight to the dwelling place of the dragon king. On the four sides of that city were seven tiers of moats, and inside the moats were full of venomous dragons, coiling together with their bodies, raising their heads and intertwining their necks to guard the city gates.
