At that time, the Bhagavat was surrounded by the great assembly, who made offerings to him, revering, honouring, and praising him. Then the Tathāgata smiled joyfully, and from his mouth sent forth a great illumination of blue, yellow, red, and white, named Great Compassion, shining far into the ten directions, reaching above to the Akaniṣṭha Heaven and below to the eighteen hells; it shone upon Devadatta's body, and all the pains in his body immediately found peace. Then the great assembly with one voice praised the Tathāgata: "Excellent! Excellent, Bhagavat! Truly this is great benevolence! Truly this is great compassion! He is able to hold an impartial mind toward both enemy and kin. Devadatta constantly harbours an evil mind, seeking to harm the Tathāgata, yet the Bhagavat does not take this as a grievance, but pities and laments him, emitting the light of great compassion to shine far upon his body."
