The Buddha said to Ānanda: "The great king of Vārāṇasī at that time was none other than my present father, Śuddhodana; the mother at that time was none other than my present mother, Queen Māyā; Prince Pāpamitra at that time was none other than Devadatta; and Prince Kalyāṇamitra at that time was none other than myself. Ānanda! In past lives, Devadatta constantly harbored evil intentions to harm and destroy me. Yet by the power of forbearance, I constantly kept in mind the bestowal of kindness, and by this means he was delivered; how much more so now that I have become a Buddha?"
