When Śāriputra had performed such boundless benefits, he addressed the great assembly, saying: “With what heart could I now watch the Tathāgata enter parinirvāṇa?” Having made this proclamation, he straightaway ascended into the sky; fire came forth from his body, and, burning his own body, he entered nirvāṇa. At that time the great assembly yearned for Śāriputra, not looking away for an instant; longing and yearning arose in their hearts, and raising their voices they wept aloud, throwing dust and dirt over their bodies. The sun lost its bright light, and heaven and earth shook violently. Then the great assembly gathered his relics and erected a stūpa to make offerings to them. At that time boundless hundreds of thousands among the great assembly circumambulated the stūpa; because they were mindful of Śāriputra, suffering and distress arose in their hearts, and wandering about wildly, they lost their right mindfulness.
