He replied, “They are obtained in all of them. Having first bowed to the feet of the Saṅgha with a wholesome mind, received the robes and bowl, asked the upādhyāya, vigorously requested the precepts, knelt on one knee with palms joined, and completed the fourfold karmavācanā, if one continues with a wholesome mind, the precept-matter is accomplished; this is called obtaining the precepts within a wholesome mind. If one previously generated wholesome thoughts constantly during the sequential procedures and produced the various informative actions, but at the time of the fourfold karmavācanā gives rise to unwholesome thoughts such as greed and anger, and the precept-matter is accomplished within this mind, this is called obtaining the precepts within an unwholesome mind. It is through the power of the original wholesome mind and wholesome instruction that one obtains these precepts, not through the power of the unwholesome mind. If one previously produced informative actions with a wholesome mind, but at the time of the fourfold karmavācanā becomes drowsy or falls asleep, and the precept-matter is produced within this sleeping mind, this is called obtaining the precepts within an indeterminate mind. If one previously produced informative actions with a wholesome mind, but at the time of the fourfold karmavācanā enters the concentration of cessation (nirodhasamāpatti), and precisely at that time the precept-matter is accomplished, this is called obtaining the precepts within a mindless state.”
