"Furthermore, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva knows kindness and repays kindness, reflects upon its meaning, attains dhāraṇī through much learning, and blazes the torch of Dharma. In order to benefit all sentient beings, he should cultivate giving, morality, and much learning. Making offerings to the preacher, not seeking faults in the Dharma or faults in the preacher, having no harmful intent, and giving fearlessness to sentient beings—this is called knowing kindness; experiencing the bliss of humans and devas, and attaining the path to nirvāṇa—this is called repaying kindness. The bodhisattva furthermore has four types: cultivating forbearance, destroying non-forbearance, adorning bodhi, and gathering sentient beings. Causing them to cultivate forbearance—whether enduring oneself or causing others to endure—and being far removed from fear—this is called knowing kindness. Through the cause and condition of forbearance, having no anger, having unfailing retinues, not suffering distress, and having no remorse in the mind; after casting off this body, enjoying the bliss of humans and devas, and swiftly attaining the bliss of nirvāṇa—this is called repaying kindness."
