The root text says: 'Because there is the condition of the objective realm, six kinds of characteristics are further produced. What are the six? First is the characteristic of knowledge: relying on the objective realm, the mind gives rise to discrimination between the agreeable and disagreeable. Second is the characteristic of continuity: relying on knowledge, it gives rise to feelings of suffering and pleasure, with thoughts arising in the mind associated continuously without interruption. Third is the characteristic of grasping: relying on continuity, it attends to and thinks upon the objective realm, maintaining suffering and pleasure, and the mind gives rise to attachment. Fourth is the characteristic of reckoning names: relying on deluded attachment, it discriminates the characteristics of provisional names and words. Fifth is the characteristic of giving rise to karma: relying on names, it seeks after names and grasps them, creating various kinds of karma. Sixth is the characteristic of suffering bound to karma: because it receives retribution relying on karma, it is without autonomy.'
