The Exposition says: Next is the fourth [practice], the practices of specific antidotes. The eight liberations are: 1. having internal form, contemplating forms; 2. lacking internal form, contemplating forms; 3. the pure liberation realized personally with the body; 4. the base of infinite space; 5. the base of infinite consciousness; 6. the base of nothingness; 7. the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; 8. the liberation of cessation. That noble beings can accord with [what is] without effluents and can separate from all obstacles is called 'liberation'. The eight bases of mastery are: 1. having internal form, contemplating external forms as few, whether pleasant or unpleasant, inferior or superior, gaining superior knowledge and superior vision toward those forms and apprehending their true characteristic; 2. having internal form, contemplating external forms as many, the rest being as explained before and the following to be understood accordingly; 3. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as few; 4. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as many; 5. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as blue, showing blue, appearing blue, and having blue light; 6. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as yellow; 7. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as red; 8. lacking internal notion of form, contemplating external forms as white. To overcome and master the objective referent is called a 'base of mastery'. The nine sequential meditative attainments are the four dhyānas, the four formless [attainments], and the attainment of cessation. They are designated 'sequential' because they progress gradually from coarse to subtle, ascending and descending in sequence. The ten totality bases are the bases of earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, white, infinite space, and infinite consciousness. Contemplating them as pervading everything and vast in measure is called a 'totality base'. The intrinsic natures, additions and reductions, and underlying reasons of these involve immeasurable doctrinal approaches, as explained elsewhere.
