The Commentary says: Next is the second [section], explaining the stages of the ultimate. Within this there are two: first, the stages of the Great Vehicle; later, the stages of the three vehicles. This is the first, explaining only the ten stages of a bodhisattva during the causal [stages]. 1. The Joyous Stage: one initially attains the noble nature, fully realizes the two emptinesses, can benefit oneself and others, and gives rise to great joy. 2. The Immaculate Stage: one is endowed with pure morality and separates far from the defiling stains of afflictions that can give rise to subtle transgressions. 3. The Luminous Stage: one accomplishes superior concentration and the great retention of Dharma, and can emit the light of boundless wonderful insight. 4. The Radiant Stage: one abides peacefully in the supreme factors of awakening, and the flame of insight blazes, burning the firewood of afflictions. 5. The Difficult to Conquer Stage: the activity modes of the two wisdoms—the real and the conventional—are mutually contrary, and bringing them into congruence is extremely difficult to conquer. 6. The Manifesting Stage: one abides in the wisdom of dependent origination and brings the supreme nonconceptual prajñā to manifest before oneself. 7. The Far-Reaching Stage: one reaches the far limit of purposeful effort in abiding in signlessness, transcending the worldly paths and those of the two vehicles. 8. The Immovable Stage: nonconceptual wisdom continues spontaneously, and signs, functional operations, and afflictions cannot move it. 9. The Good Intelligence Stage: one accomplishes the subtle and wonderful four unhindered understandings, and is able to preach the Dharma well everywhere in the ten directions. 10. The Cloud of Dharma Stage: the great Dharma-wisdom cloud contains the waters of all virtues, overshadows coarse heaviness like empty space, and fills the dharmakāya. These stages generally take all conditioned and unconditioned virtues as their intrinsic nature, serving as a superior support for the practices cultivated so as to cause them to be produced and grow; hence they are called 'stages'.
