The commentary says: This clarifies the practice of self-benefit through desire and the like. When the bodhisattva's body and mind give rise to this desire and the like, their form and color are pure and bright, unable to be defiled by any foul defilement. Therefore, they preserve defilements to assist their vow to take rebirth and act with great sovereignty. In the case of a Buddha, there is a resemblance to desire and the like, and through this desire and the like they benefit sentient beings. Even if they abide in a mind of the fault of defilement, or abide in the remaining wholesome or indeterminate minds with effluents, this is called 'having faults'. 'Fault' has the meaning of effluents. Within these three natures, at all times, [such things] cannot defile [them]. Just as a lotus flower and the like, though emerging from the mud, cannot be stained by the mud, the bodhisattva's mind is also like this.
