The Commentary says: This explains the secondary defilements. Entanglements (paryavasthāna) mean that they repeatedly flare up and appear directly before the mind, coiling around it; thus they are called "entanglements". There are eight kinds: torpor and drowsiness obstruct tranquility (śamatha); restlessness and regret obstruct exertion; envy and stinginess obstruct equanimity (upekṣā); and lack of shame and lack of conscience obstruct morality; therefore only eight are established. Stains (mala) are of six kinds: malice, resentment, vexation, dissimulation, deceit, and arrogance. Because they taint and foul sentient beings, they are called "stains". These six have coarse marks and are severely condemned, so they are designated by the name "stains".
