3.43

The Explication says: This explains that it extremely illuminates the purity of intrinsic nature of the secondary defilements. The meanings of entanglements, stains, and so forth are all as explained before. What is called "fetters" refers to the nine fetters, namely: desire, hostility, pride, ignorance, attachment to views, doubt, jealousy, stinginess, and [the view of self] fetters. "Fetter" (saṃyojana) means binding; they can bind one to suffering and are difficult to untie, hence they are called "fetters".
