The commentary says: Ordinary beings' false imagination delights in and attaches to saṃsāra, whose nature is not peaceful, so there is non-detachment and non-peacefulness. In order to refute them, [the Buddha] spoke of detachment and peacefulness; relying on the gateways of detachment and peacefulness to refute their sickness, entering into truth is named detachment, peacefulness, and so forth. In reality, the substance of phenomena is neither distant nor not distant, neither peaceful nor not peaceful. Peacefulness, non-peacefulness, and so forth are all gateways of entry, and therefore are not the nature of phenomena. Because the substance of the true nature has its path of words and speech severed, and the course of discursive inquiry stilled, detachment and so forth are therefore all unobtainable.
