The Commentary says: Because the majestic power of the sūtra can subdue all evils, even the sins of killing are completely eradicated. Because one gives rise to this supreme practice through awakening to the dharma-nature, this great sin does not incur bad retribution. Because the majestic power of the sūtra is well able to subdue all defilements, secondary defilements, bad karmas, and so forth, even if such sins exist, they do not incur bad retribution. Sentient beings are bound by the bond of marks, and also by the bond of coarse heaviness (dauṣṭhulya); only afterwards, by cultivating both tranquility and insight, are they completely liberated from both. All bad karmas arise from defilements, and all defilements arise from conceptual discrimination. Now, being separated from conceptual proliferation, one cuts off all conceptual discriminations; when conceptual discrimination is exhausted, defilements and karma are also destroyed. Therefore, by hearing the sūtra and having faithful understanding, this great sin is certainly extinguished.
