Regarding the second point, that its substance is broad and generally subsumes all six: Vasubandhu says, "The pāramitā of dāna subsumes all six: material necessities, fearlessness, and the Dharma. Here, one, two, and three [are subsumed]; this is called the abiding of cultivation." Asaṅga's intention is also the same, stating that the pāramitā of dāna has three aspects: first, material necessities, which has two kinds, namely giving internal wealth and external wealth; second, fearlessness, which refers to causing them to be separated from suffering and attain joy, not allowing them to fear; third, the gift of the Dharma, which refers to preaching the Dharma in accordance with faculties and responding to ailments. Therein, material necessities subsumes one, namely the pāramitā of dāna; fearlessness subsumes two, namely kṣānti and śīla, because it causes fear not to arise regarding evil already committed or not yet committed; the gift of the Dharma subsumes three, namely vīrya, samādhi, and prajñā, because one is not fatigued when properly preaching the Dharma, and because one observes and knows faculties and clearly discriminates. The treatise of Guṇamati (Vivṛtisaṃgraha / Wuxing lun) also makes this explanation, stating that within the nature of giving, there are presently the six pāramitās, because they are subsumed under material giving, the giving of fearlessness, and the giving of Dharma. In explanation: some explain that this corresponds in sequence with prajñā; others explain that within each of the three kinds of giving, all six are subsumed, and by such a meaning it is exclusively the dāna of giving.
