"One should practice dāna without abiding in things" means not being attached to one's own body. That is, when practicing giving, one does not seek physical elegance or beauty for oneself, but only acts for the sake of bodhi. "Should not abide in anything" means not being attached to requital of kindness. "Not abiding in form, sound," and so forth means practicing giving without being attached to external sovereign fruits, such as money, wealth, male and female servants, and the like. Therefore the treatise says: "To one's own body and requital of kindness, / And toward the fruition, one is not attached; / Protecting and preserving, one does not give, / Preventing the seeking of different matters." Therein, the first two lines correspond to the text, and the next two lines explain the previous intention. Among them, the first line explains not being attached to one's own body, and the next line explains not being attached to requital of kindness and fruition, as can easily be understood in detail in the treatise.
