1.54

「持鉢」者，應量器，一者、應自所食量，二者、應外所施量故，不大不小名應量也。為表佛無分別智內證於理，如鉢受食；心起於智，故復名持。

"Holding the bowl" means [holding] the vessel of appropriate capacity: first, because it is appropriate to the capacity of one's own food; second, because it is appropriate to the capacity of what is given by others outside; being neither too large nor too small, it is called of "appropriate capacity". This symbolizes the Buddha's non-conceptual wisdom internally realizing the principle, just as a bowl receives food; when the mind gives rise to wisdom, it is thus also called "holding".
