"Non-loss", the fifth, means not losing the right path; this refutes the graspings of addition and subtraction. Grasping that there are persons and phenomena within the dwelling places of practice is called the grasping of addition; repudiating the wonderful Dharma of tathatā is called the grasping of subtraction. If one does this, one will lose the right path; now both graspings are refuted, hence it is called "non-loss". Therefore, the treatise says: within this, if it says, "what the Tathāgata speaks of as the nature of merit is not the nature of merit", this refutes the extreme of addition, because that accumulation of merit lacks a conceptually differentiated intrinsic nature; if it further says, "therefore the Tathāgata speaks of the Tathāgata's accumulation of merit", this refutes the extreme of subtraction, because although it does not have intrinsic nature as words suggest, there is an expressible entity, since the Tathāgata speaks of the accumulation of merit; down to saying "what are called buddhadharmas are not buddhadharmas"—all such passages should be explained accordingly as being called "non-loss".
