1.98

因何發心？一者、見聞佛等功德神力；二者、聞說菩薩藏教；三者、見聞佛法將滅，念言法住能滅大苦；四者、末劫多見眾生癡、無慚愧、慳、嫉、憂苦、惡行、放逸、懈怠、不信，念言濁世多起如是惡煩惱時，我當發心令餘學我起菩提願，由此便發大菩提心。

For what reasons is the mind generated? First, seeing or hearing the spiritual powers and merits of the Buddhas and others; second, hearing the teachings of the Bodhisattva Piṭaka expounded; third, seeing or hearing that the Buddha-Dharma is about to perish and reflecting, 'If the Dharma abides, it can eradicate great suffering'; fourth, in the final kalpa, frequently seeing sentient beings who are foolish, shameless, unconscionable, stingy, jealous, afflicted by grief, engaged in evil conduct, heedless, indolent, and faithless, and reflecting, 'When so many such evil afflictions arise in this turbid world, I should generate the mind to make others emulate me and produce the vow for bodhi.' Through this, one then generates the great bodhicitta.
