1.29

因何發心？一者、見聞佛等神力；二者、聞說菩薩藏教；三者、見聞佛法將滅，念言法住能滅大苦；四者、末劫多見眾生癡、無慚、愧、慳、嫉、憂苦、惡行、放逸、懈怠、不信，念言濁世多起如是惡煩惱時，我當發心，令餘學我起菩提願，由此便發大菩提心。

Due to what does one generate the aspiration? First, seeing or hearing of the supernatural powers of the buddhas and others; second, hearing the expounding of the Bodhisattvapiṭaka teachings; third, seeing or hearing that the Buddha-Dharma is about to perish, thinking that the abiding of the Dharma can eradicate great suffering; fourth, in the final age seeing many sentient beings with delusion, lack of shame, lack of conscience, stinginess, jealousy, sorrow and suffering, evil conduct, negligence, indolence, and lack of faith, thinking: 'When in the degenerate age such evil defilements frequently arise, I should generate the aspiration so as to cause others to emulate me in giving rise to the vow for bodhi'—due to these, one then generates the great aspiration for bodhi.
