2.117

無著云，此第四、破外疑。疑云：「釋迦於燃燈所不得菩提，後時自得。」為斷此取故也。於中亦為二，初、遣彼外取，次、自彰無得。既無有法可得，何有後自取也？故作此言名為不實。今此經中漏「不實語」字，餘本皆有也。

Asaṅga says: This is the fourth [point], demolishing the doubts of outsiders. The doubt says: 'Śākyamuni did not attain bodhi in the presence of Dīpaṅkara, but attained it on his own at a later time.' It is to sever this clinging. Within it there are also two: first, dispelling that external clinging, and next, displaying non-attainment on one's own. Since there is no phenomenon that can be attained, how could there be a later attainment on his own? Therefore, making this statement is called untruthful. Now, in this sūtra, the characters for 'speaks untruthfully' are omitted, but other editions all have them.
