Asaṅga explains: It cannot be grasped according to literal expression, hence 'not real'; nor is it sought apart from words, hence 'not unreal.' What ordinary beings say is false, hence 'not real'; what the Buddhas preach can be relied upon, hence 'not unreal.' Ordinary beings cannot attain it through speech, hence 'not real'; it can be expressed by resorting to the Buddha's words, hence 'not unreal.' If one seeks it apart from words, bodhi would be without a cause, which is called 'not real'; but because it must depend on hearing the teaching before it can be realized, bodhi has a cause, which is called 'not unreal.' If one grasps and clings according to literal expression, there is no escape from saṃsāra, and thus one must not [grasp it] according to literal expression; yet matching the Dharma necessarily depends on words, and only then accords with the real. One need only cultivate in accordance with the Buddha's words, and later, at the time of realization and joining, one will awaken on one's own.
