Asaṅga says: Previously, for the sake of realization within what should be known, seeing was established; for the sake of teaching those various sentient beings tranquility of mind, cognition was established. That is, taking the fleshly and heavenly eyes as their vanguard, one gives rise to the wisdom and Dharma eyes to contemplate principle and know [spiritual] capacities, in order to explain the Dharma for others. The preceding was spoken of as the purification of seeing to display realization; the present is spoken of as the purification of cognition to display instruction. That is, if among sentient beings there is a mind with lust, a mind without lust, and so forth, the Tathāgata fully contemplates, knows, and instructs them, causing them to abandon defilement and advance in goodness. As for saying 'all the sand, did the Buddha speak of it as sand?', it means: regarding the sand of dependent origination, did the Buddha speak of it as the grasped, real sand? The intention of the question is like this.
