The Commentary says: This is the second [part], Subhūti's reply; first he states the answer, and next he explains the answer. The meaning of this answer is: when one is directly realizing the principle within contemplation, there is no going toward and entering, and one does not form the conception of entering; therefore, one only establishes the designation for them, calling them a 'stream-enterer'. Furthermore, if entering forms, sounds, scents, and so forth, there would be conceptual discrimination; when directly realizing the true principle, one merely accords secretly with the principle without entering dharmas such as forms and sounds, and is thus called a 'stream-enterer'. The others are all answered on the basis of being within contemplation. That is to say, when in contemplation, one does not form the understanding of being an grasper or an attainer; thus this designation does not contradict what was said earlier. The above is Vasubandhu's intention.
