Asaṅga says: in the Śrāvakayāna, the Bhagavat taught that there are dharmas and there is emptiness; when hearing this sūtra, hearing that dharmas do not exist, one is startled; hearing that emptiness does not exist, one is terrified; when reflecting, within the principle that neither exists, being unable to conform to it, one is afraid. Furthermore, there is another explanation: one should know this is on account of the three kinds of non-self-nature, namely the non-self-nature of marks, of arising, and of the ultimate. The explanation says: being free from essential marks in the imagined nature is called 'not startled'; being without a spontaneous nature of arising in the dependent nature is called 'not terrified'; and being without those grasped persons and dharmas in the perfected nature is called 'not afraid.'
