Commentary: Vasubandhu says: Within this second part, extensively refuting various doubts, there are six [doubts]. The first doubt says: 'Since it is said that in reality there is no dharma called a bodhisattva, how did the Tathāgata Śākyamuni, in the presence of Dīpaṃkara Buddha, make offerings with flowers and spread his hair to cover the mud, practicing the bodhisattva path in such a manner?' The second, below 'Subhūti! A bodhisattva is also like this,' doubts: 'If there are no bodhisattvas, then Buddhas also do not achieve great bodhi, and sentient beings also do not enter great nirvāṇa, and so forth. If that is the case, for what purpose does a bodhisattva generate the mind wishing to cause sentient beings to enter nirvāṇa and so forth?' These two kinds of doubts arise on the basis of the earlier direct elucidation of the doctrine itself. Below there are four doubts that arise sequentially from resolving doubts, which will be understood below. This [passage] is precisely to refute the first doubt, and within it there are three [sections].
