Asaṅga says: 'This means knowing their minds in all walking, standing, and actions, and seeing their physical body which forms the basis for the four aggregates.' These reveal being embraced by spiritual friends. The treatise says: 'If seeing were not mentioned, one might suppose the Tathāgata knows through inferential cognition; if knowing were not mentioned, one might suppose the Tathāgata sees with the physical eye. Therefore both words are necessary.' Regarding 'attain merit', the Wei [translation] says: 'produce such merit, grasp such merit.' The treatise says: 'Producing is the cause that can produce; grasping has the meaning of the fruit of perfuming and cultivating one's own essence.' Asaṅga says: 'Producing is the manifest activity when merit is just arising; grasping is holding the seeds when that [manifest activity] ceases. Here saying "attain": both meanings of producing and grasping are not separate from attaining; the single character "attain" embraces both producing and grasping.'
