偈云「受持法及說，不空於福德，福不趣菩提，二能趣菩提。」四句者，但於四句詮義究竟即成四句偈，如「凡所有相皆是虛妄，若見諸相非相即見如來」，此最妙也。然但義見四句，持說即趣菩提，文或增減，不必唯四；義若闕者，則互成謗。

The verse says: 'Receiving and upholding the Dharma and preaching it / Is not devoid of merit and virtue; / Merit does not tend toward bodhi, / But these two can tend toward bodhi.' As for 'four lines', simply making the meaning completely clear within four lines constitutes a four-line verse, such as: 'All that has characteristics is illusory; if one sees all characteristics as non-characteristics, one immediately sees the Tathāgata'—this is the most wondrous. However, as long as the meaning is evident in four lines, upholding and preaching it tends toward bodhi; the text may be longer or shorter and need not be only four [lines]. If the meaning is defective, then it mutally results in slander.
