經者，梵音修多羅，義翻為契經。契者，詮表義理，契合人心，即契理、契機也。經者，《佛地論》云：「能貫能攝，故名為經。」以佛聖教貫穿所應說義，攝持所化生故。

As for 'sūtra', its Sanskrit sound is sūtra, translated according to meaning as 'concordant scripture'. 'Concordant' means expressing doctrines and principles while according with people's minds; that is, according with principle and according with capacity. As for 'sūtra', the Buddhabhūmi-vyākhyāna says: 'Able to string together and able to gather, hence it is called a sūtra.' This is because the Buddha's holy teaching strings together the meanings that should be spoken, and gathers and maintains the beings to be transformed.
