「何以故？若菩薩不住相布施，其福德不可思量。須菩提！於意云何？東方虛空可思量不？」「不也。世尊！」「須菩提！南、西、北方、四維、上、下虛空可思量不？」「不也。世尊！」「須菩提！菩薩無住相布施，福德亦復如是，不可思量。」

"Why is this? If a bodhisattva practices generosity without abiding in marks, their merit cannot be conceived. Subhūti, what do you think? Can the space in the eastern direction be conceived?" "No, World-Honoured One." "Subhūti, can the space in the south, west, north, the four intermediate directions, above, and below be conceived?" "No, World-Honoured One." "Subhūti, the merit of a bodhisattva who practices generosity without abiding in marks is also like this: it cannot be conceived."
