Regarding the 'final five hundred years', the Mahāsaṃnipāta says: 'In the first five hundred years, liberation is solid; in the second five hundred years, dhyāna is solid; the third, much learning; the fourth, stupas and temples; the fifth, dispute and contention—all follow the pattern of the first two phrases.' Originally doubting there would be no faith in the evil age, it therefore raises the evil age to sever the doubt. 'Upholding the precepts and cultivating merit' refers to precepts and dhyāna. 'Taking these to be true' is correct and non-inverted understanding. Asaṅga says: 'The three learnings of higher precepts and so on reveal the merits of practicing few desires and so forth: precepts lead out of the three bad destinies, dhyāna leads out of the six desires, and wisdom leads out of the three realms.'
