23. Severing the doubt: 'The Buddha-fruit is unrelated to merit and marks.' Because previously inferring the dharmakāya from marks was an error, and hearing that seeing by form and seeking by sound is deviant, [someone] then thought: 'The Buddha-fruit is entirely markless and unconditioned; if so, cultivating the cause of merit only produces the fruit of marks; since the fruit of marks is not the Buddha-fruit, the Buddha-fruit is not attained through possessing marks; therefore, the Buddha-fruit is ultimately unrelated to merit and marks.' Hence the treatise states: 'Someone gives rise to the thought: If one does not attain great bodhi on the basis of merit, then these bodhisattvas will lose their merit and lose their karmic fruition.'
