As for "gazing at the source yet bewildered by the streams": "gazing" means looking up toward; "source" means the place where the water arises. "Bewildered" means confused and darkened; "streams" means branch currents. When a road divides it is called a fork; when water divides it is called a branch stream. The meaning is: although this sūtra takes marklessness as its tenet, its textual meanings contain a thousand differences. Now, although one tallies with the general, fundamental source of the tenet, one entirely departs from the differentiated principles and meanings; hence it says "gazing at the source yet bewildered by the streams." These words are in fact from Master Wŏnhyo's preface to the Awakening of Faith. Although used here, the meaning differs from his. In his work, the One Mind is the source, and arising and ceasing in accord with conditions are the streams. Here, the sūtra's tenet is the source, and the principles and meanings are the streams. Thus they are not the same.
