"The rest," and so forth: the previous two each had a single strength, whereas this is wholly heterodox and deviant. The previous ones relied on persons and teachings, whereas this is merely following whim and conjecturing from one's own heart—rash, negligent, and erroneous words. Therefore it says, "Heart-speculations and whimsical annotations are unworthy of perusal, set them aside beyond words"; hence it says "not worth discussing." Among these, this sort of commentary is particularly abundant in the world. The commentator states: "For a long time I set my aspiration on this sūtra, inquiring everywhere into various commentaries, and personally saw several dozen works. Some falsely attributed theirs to Vajragarbha, some claimed Master Baozhi, some Fu Dashi, some Bodhidharma, some the Fifth Patriarch, or some signed their own names. All were decorated very lavishly with fine paper and fine ink, yet the textual meanings within were completely unworthy of perusal. For instance, explaining Śrāvastī (Shewei Guo) as 'wei means a hundred spirits defend and protect'—citing this one example illustrates the rest; it was thus from beginning to end. If there are boundless foolish people who cannot discern this and treasure them as the utmost wonder, it is truly lamentable!"
