Regarding 'calamities and distress', and so forth: When there is distress, disasters and misfortunes will certainly come; when there is karma, suffering fruits will definitely arrive. When distress is removed, disasters and misfortunes do not arise; when karma is destroyed, suffering fruits do not come to be. Regarding 'according with what people need', there are two meanings: First, other things cannot accord with whatever is needed—gold cannot serve the use of silver, gauze cannot serve the use of brocade, and so forth; vajra, however, is not like this, as whatever is needed is obtained. In the Dharma it is also like this: contaminated merits for a human cannot serve for a deva, or for wealth cannot serve for poverty; uncontaminated [merits] are not like this, being accomplished according to one's mind. Second, other things are exhausted when used, whereas vajra yields inexhaustibly. In terms of the Dharma it is also like this: contaminated things are exhausted when experienced, whereas uncontaminated things are inexhaustible when experienced.
